Cozy Farmhouse with Rustic Charm: Looking Glass Farm

Posted on

Looking Glass Farm is a rustic New England farmhouse by design-build studio JLF Architects, set within the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley, in upstate New York. This modernized version of a farmhouse is owned by a husband-and-wife duo of NYC designers, wishing for a relaxing countryside getaway two hours outside of the city. Originally seeking a fixer-upper on just two acres, the couple ended up with 40-acres and no house!

They took a more grassroots approach to build their home, camping out for three years on their property for their research and development phase. When they were ready to build, they knew exactly how to capitalize on their views and to respect the land. Camping helped to give the homeowners an intimate understanding of their land: this informed the siting, passive solar, and materials used.

What We Love: This charming New England farmhouse features beautiful barn wood walls that lend an authentic feel. The interiors are open and airy with plenty of cozy warmth thanks to the heavy use of wood. We are especially loving the great room, with its soaring ceilings, floor-to-ceiling stone-clad fireplace and large windows framing the lush greenery surrounding this stunning farmhouse…

Tell Us: What do you think of this homestead, would this be your vision of the ideal family home? Please share your opinions in the comments at the end of this article!

Industrial and reclaimed elements were used in the design, including aluminum accents, paned windows, and barn wood walls. All of the materials used in the design pay homage to the surrounding forest.
