In a townhouse in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, Joan Craig and Kevin Lichten of Lichten Craig Architecure + Interiors turned an awkward "leftover" space linking the living room, dining area, and stair hall into a cozy literary corner that quickly became a favorite retreat for the client.

In the living room, the sofa is upholstered in a Jim Thompson mohair, the rug is by Tai Ping, the stools are by Giobagnara, the bronze side tables are by Caste, and the leather chairs are by Knoll. The banquettes flanking the fireplace are by Baker and are covered in a Pollack fabric. Photos: Werner Straube

A formerly awkward, unused space was fitted out with custom cabinetry to hold the client's library; the chair is vintage.

In the dining area, the walls are covered in a paper by Trove, the table is from India, and the vintage dining chairs are upholstered in an Edelman leather. The stairhall beyond leads into the library corner.
