Changing artwork in a room is one of the easiest ways to give spaces a decorating update. Original or antique art can be expensive and the dollars can quickly add up. Today I’m sharing how to make a vintage style hanging poster that’s budget-friendly and visually appealing. Since there are a variety of posters available, you’re sure to find something for any room of your house.

I recently transformed a plain poster into a vintage style hanging one. You may remember seeing it in my spring dining room last week. I needed artwork for this space above the table and I really wanted to use my bird poster, but I had to give it some type of frame.

In the past, I’ve temporarily applied some of my posters to another artwork board I have, like you see here on my past Christmas mantel.

This photo shows how I added the vintage script poster to another board with a wheat graphic on it. I have several posters, and they’re just the right size to fit on top of my wheat art. I simply use double-sided tape to adhere them. No damage is done to either the poster or the board and I can keep swapping out posters according to the season.

Sometimes I hang my posters on the painted shutters in my living room. I stretch a piece of twine or thin rope across the top of the shutters and then clip the poster onto the twine with wooden clothespins.

But for my spring dining room, I wanted to create a vintage style hanging poster. This was so easy to do and cost just a few dollars.

Supplies needed are cording for hanging the poster, square dowels, wood stain, and 2-inch wide thin slates of wood. Cut the dowels to be 3 inches longer than the width of your poster, so that you’ll have 1.5 inches extending on either side. Stain the dowels and let dry. I adhered the poster to the stained dowels using a combination of hot glue and staples.

Line up the top and bottom of the poster with the edge of the dowel. Glue and staple in place. Then add your supporting wood slat over the back side of the poster and staple in a few places. Finally, you’ll add your cording to the top dowel for hanging. Measure the length of cord and cut. Tie a knot in each end of the cord and staple to the top side of the top square dowel.

If you don’t want to cut and stain your dowels, you can always order a poster hanging kit. They come in either horizontal or vertical sizes. Simply click on either image to find it on Amazon.

After you’ve attached the cording, it’s time to hang your vintage style hanging poster! This is exactly what I wanted for this space but I couldn’t find anything. I’m so happy I had the idea to create a wall hanging using a poster I already had.
