In this installment of our Studio Visit series, where we highlight the inspiration behind a designer's favorite piece of furniture, we invited Puru Das of DeMuro Das to share the details behind the brand's versatile Andre Cabinet.

Q: What inspired you to design the Andre Cabinet?

A: Our design process often begins with an exploration of materials and a range of historical references. In the case of the Andre, we began with our Carta finish, which has the organic appeal of parchment, a material closely tied to the Art Deco period. Pairing it with a Brutalist-inspired handle allowed us to mix it up and update the references so they feel more current. The glossy black Koto top alongside the bronze-finished handle add a touch of old-school glamour to the piece.

Q: Did you see a void in the marketplace, or did you design it for a particular project and then realize it had broader appeal?

A: While working on our interior design projects, we often custom design pieces that feel luxurious and special, but are also practical to use in modern life. The size, shape and color palette of the Andre Cabinet make it quite versatile while still making a statement in a room.
Q: What makes the cabinet so special?

A: In addition to the use of our Carta finish, our favorite detail is the bronze finished handle, which we hand-cast from our own design inspired by an Italian Brutalist sculpture. The juxtaposition of these two elements are what we think makes this piece so special.

Q: The cabinet really makes a statement, so ideally, how and where would you like to see it used?

A: This would be a great piece in a hallway because it's not too deep and therefore fits well into a narrow space. In our design practice, we also often use a pair of Andre Cabinets to flank a doorway or as a dining room sideboard.
Q: How does it coordinate with other items in your collection?

A: We believe that pieces can be luxurious and livable at the same time – the Andre is a great example of that. It also exemplifies our collection's focus on special finishes paired with clean, modern shapes that nod to the past and present. The straight lines of this piece would pair particularly well with the curved shapes of our Astra and Claire sofas, and our Athena and Acantha side tables.
Q: Are you able to offer customized versions?

A: This cabinet can be made in a variety of sizes. The top and sides can be done in a variety of different exotic wood veneers, and we also have a number of finish options for the handle.
