Last Sunday we toured a beautifully restored home that suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy. We’re staying on the eastern coast today with a gorgeous new home located in the suburbs of New York. The interior details are amazing; I love when a house has good bones. Even if you have a tract home, you can add simple touches like a chair rail, crown molding, board and batten siding, and more. It’s not hard to install and can make a powerful impact. Today’s suburban New York home provides inspiration for some of these projects. Photos and project by DeGraw & DeHaan Architects.

When you step into the entryway of this pretty home, you’re immediately greeted with architectural details like a built-in bench and shelves, crown molding, bead board, and wide baseboards. Brick flooring adds yet another level of detail and texture.
A coffered ceiling graces the living room, complete with a stately mantel and French doors. It’s easy to add trim work to a plain fireplace to give it more depth and interest.
Gleaming hardwood floors run throughout this suburban New York home. Over-sized windows allow plenty of natural light in to brighten the living spaces. I’m a huge fan of windows and it’s always something I notice when looking for a new home.
I know some of you think white kitchens are cold and stark, but it helps when there are plenty of windows to let the sun shine in and warm the room. Note the toe holds at the bottom of the cabinetry. You can find small, decorative pieces at home improvement stores that allow you to create this look.
Oh how I’d love to have a butler’s pantry! I remember cleaning Mrs. Ashby’s house when I was a young girl and even back then, I was envious of her butler’s pantry where she kept her English tea cup filled with brandy!
A beautiful sun room creates space for relaxing or entertaining guests. Once again, architectural detail is applied to the ceiling, and over-sized windows dominate the room. Bamboo shades add a bit of warm texture.
A large window seat occupies one wall in the master bedroom with its tray ceiling and more crown molding. A beautiful fireplace creates opportunity for cozy winter evenings.
The master bath features a luxurious bath with wood detailing painted white. To create this look with a builder grade tub, install decorative wood panels on the tub’s face.
Another bathroom in the house features more of a farmhouse look, with its painted and distressed vanity, farmhouse sink, and brick floor.
