For an elegant home in West Clay Park, a secluded neighborhood on the edge of the Presidio, Ellen Nystrom of Nystrom Design was tasked with brightening up the interiors so that the house would feel comfortable for everyday living, without losing any of the stateliness that had shaped its personality. Here, explore the light, transitional estate that finds depth in juxtaposed textures, metallic accents, and varying shades of sophisticated blue.

To counter the architectural formality of the tall windows and high ceilings, Nystrom introduced a tempered, modern edge into the space through sleek, mirrored furnishings, leather accents, and creative prints, like a woven geometric runner rug from Annie Selke.

A console table from Sunpan with a petrified wood top and Uttermost lamps featuring stacked-oval bases help the foyer feel transitional, rather than traditional. Nystrom outfitted the client's existing Chippendale chairs with a zebra printed hair-on-hide from Edelman Leather.

Because the original molding was beautiful yet dark and heavy, the designer selected a citron-colored grasscloth wallcovering from Stark to brighten the room. Other accents, including embroidered drapery fabric from Kravet, keep the space light, while a black-and-white photograph by Youngbok Park boldly contrasts with the grasscloth, bringing tension to the design. Surrounding an Ethan Allen table, blue upholstery from Kravet provides a finishing pop of blue. The chairs are also from Kravet.

For the living room, Nystrom combined elegant blues and hints of texture with bright, airy walls to craft a space that's both calming and visually dynamic. Soft blue Kravet fabric in a herringbone print covers the sofa from Paladin Furniture. The armchairs and their upholstery are also from Kravet. Light gray Pindler drapery filters light into the space, while a blue area rug from Serena & Lily enhances the room's cool hues. Above the fireplace, unique artworks by Yossi Ben Abu, sourced from Simon Breitbard Fine Arts, lend a contemporary note to the space. The drum pendant is from Hinkley Lighting, the fireplace sconces are from Hudson Valley Lighting, and the coffee table is from Studio|A.

Prints and colors complement and contrast in the media room. The Room & Board sofa is decorated with accent pillows covered in fabric from Romo and Camengo, and the Jessica Charles swivel chair is upholstered in a bright geometric print from Fabricut. The tripod floor lamp is from A-Line.
